Preparations: Premier Inn Loughborough
First Look: Grace Dieu Ruins
Wedding: The Carriage Hall
There are some people you meet who change you, and the way you view the world.
Maybe I should start back in November, it was the day after my birthday that I first met Rowena Mcknight, she had just come back from doing a school run for an ill friends children. This sense of community was to permeate everything that followed.
Paul and Allison were both working overseas doing aide work. Paul was in Vietnam and Allison was in Cambodia. To internationalise things even further, Allison stems from Canada, and her family were travelling from there for the big day. I listened as Rowena, Esther and Benj (Paul’s sister and her husband) talked about the family, and what a conversation it was – full of lines like “We hope his brother will make it back to be best man – he’s coaching the french ski team at the moment.”
Before the wedding we had a first look photo shoot at Grace Dieu Ruins outside Ashby. For those unfamiliar, it’s a popular american thing where the bride and groom meet before the carriage hall wedding. We jumped the fence into Grace Dieu Ruins (despite a rather large sign asking us not to). It was very very cold (Which is to be expected on January 3rd) and I can’t believe the stoicism of Allison….
The wedding itself was a blessing held by a close friend – Allison and Paul had already been officially married, but wished to celebrate with their families and friends.
It was beautiful seeing them both fall apart as Allison gave a speech about the separation that their relationship had consisted of up until now. And the Cambodian style prayer huddle (I wish I could find the right words) was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. And as for Allison & Paul, I’ve never met such a kind and considerate couple.
Anyway, I don’t think I’m doing this justice in words….. Pictures
